This beautiful piece will be much admired.
It begins with a gorgeous wreath of silvertone filigree that has a lacy look worthy of old Victorian or Edwardian pieces. This wreath, which has a slightly doming shape, is centered with a *large* oval stone which is exactly the color of dark-mirror hematite, a metallic gray or very dark silver color. The edge of the stone is textured with subtle sparkly faceting leading up to the broad "table-top" of the stone. I'm pretty sure the cabochon is actually glass (treated to look like hematite and called "hemalyke"). You can even see yourself in it.
The dark tone of hematite was associated in Victorian times with gem-quality jet and also marcasite, both of which were extensively used in jewelry in those days. Much of the jewelry had a mourning theme, and this piece would be appropriate in such a context. At the same time, it has a sort of almost cheerful Addams Family style to it and would be a great piece of goth jewelry. It is very impressive looking no matter which style you might wear it with.
Piece is unmarked. Stone has a couple of small wear spots which make it look more natural in a way. 2-3/8" long including bail.
(The pic does the piece no justice at all! As a shiny dark metal-toned item it is VERY hard to photo.)
